In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), emotions are connected with our overall health, specifically our organ systems. Each organ is associated with a specific emotion; when our emotions are left unchecked, it can lead to physical symptoms and chronic health concerns. The heart, known as the ‘Emperor’ of the organs in TCM, does so much more than pump our blood; it is a significant player in our emotional well-being, particularly our capacity for joy and connection.

Unforgiveness, the inability to release past hurts or grievances, is seen in TCM as a blockage in the heart’s energy, or “Shen.” When we hold onto anger, resentment, or bitterness, it can create stagnation in the heart meridian/channel, leading to symptoms such as anxiety, insomnia, palpitations, and even depression. This emotional burden can disrupt the natural energy flow, weakening the heart and affecting overall health.

If we view this theory from a Western or conventional medical perspective, unforgiveness and chronic negative emotions are linked to increased stress, which can elevate cortisol levels and lead to inflammation, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease. The mind-body connection is well-documented in Eastern and Western medicine, showing how our emotional states can directly impact our physical health.

By understanding the impact of unforgiveness from a TCM perspective, it offers hope and can help uncover the root emotion that may be causing health concerns. Addressing unforgiveness can help restore balance and promote optimal health.

Combining TCM and Western approaches to health, can create a holistic path to healing that honors the intricate connection between our emotions and physical body.
